Giles’ major illustration of the “eternal generation of the Son” was that of Athanasius reference to the radiance put forth by light. Jesus is the radiance of the light. This reviewer prefers the illustration set forth by the great St. Symeon the New Theologian of the Orthodox Church. The flame that emits from a candle is the same flame that enflamed it.
