Craig Keener, “Interview with Donna Covington about racism and the murder of her son” YouTube.com (July 2, 2020).

Craig Keener introduces the link to this interview by saying, “Donna Covington is Asbury’s vice president of formation and served as a top executive in a major corporation. Shortly after his graduation from college, her son, with a promising career ahead of him, was confronted with racist epithets and shot to death by a white man. The white man has not spent a single day in jail for this. She shares her heart wrenching story in this 25-minute video interview I did with her.”

Craig Keener, “Racism contradicts evangelicals’ Gospel” CraigKeener.com (July 6, 2020).

Craig Keener introduces this blog post, with links to a June 2020 statement and other posts about racial justice, by saying: “I and some other evangelical scholars recently issued a very basic statement.”

Craig Keener writes: “… we need to hear Scripture with faith, embracing it in our personal lives. A reader may embrace a false idea when taking Scripture out of context, but a reader who understands it in context yet does not embrace its demands on one’s trust also misses its function as Scripture. As Christians, we read the Bible with personal faith – not only to understand it but to embrace its message and theological worldview as true for the world in which we live.”

“Mental health is a complicated field, one that is foreign to much of the general population. And it’s seldom talked about publicly, even in churches: places meant for depth and healing. But mental health professionals have said that churches’ avoidance of these issues has recently started to change.”

“Attorneys say there may be real liability in offering counseling services to those suffering from mental illness.
The sun is heating up and that is cause for alarm for some cancer patients. Not everyone can get out and enjoy the weather, or work on outdoor chores.

For more information on Our Journey of Hope, or to speak with Rev.
The following are a few tips on how to minister to your friends, family and congregation, who are dealing with cancer throughout the summer months.

Check in on them regularly to be sure they are staying cool. Bring a fan if they have no air conditioner, or raise money for an air conditioner unit.

Keep cold water bottles or ice in their refrigerator. Staying hydrated is extremely important for a cancer patient and can help to increase their comfort.

Bring together a group to take care of their yard/housework for them. Mow the lawn, water the flowers, vacuum or do dishes.

Bring them sunscreen (broad spectrum), and a hat for days when they do go outside.

If they have children, offer to take them to the park, or the pool. Walk their dogs for them, or take them to the groomer or vet.

Bring them encouraging and uplifting books or videos. Their friends and family may have more commitments out of the house during the summer and could leave them often alone, looking for entertainment.

If they are feeling up to it, offer to bring them to your church’s vacation Bible school, or other events.

Richard J. Mouw, “Mormons Approaching Orthodoxy” First Things (May 2016).

Richard Mouw argues that today’s Mormons do not necessarily agree with the 1840 Snow couplet, “As man is, God once was. As God is, man may become.” Mouw, president emeritus of Fuller Theological Seminary, says that there has been “a decision on the part of the Mormon leadership to downplay the Snow couplet within the corpus of Mormon teachings about the deity, not just to outsiders, but within their own community. This suggests that contemporary Mormonism is interested in joining the broad Jewish and Christian consensus that God is ontologically different from man—or at least that Mormons today don’t want to directly contradict that consensus.”

Read the related review essay by Gerald McDermott, “Mormons and Christians: So Close, Yet So Far Away: What should we make of claims that the two faiths are on a path to reconciling?” Christianity Today (September 7, 2016).

New Testament scholar Craig Keener answers questions about what the Bible says about doubting our salvation in this short video. “The Bible doesn’t say that we are saved by confidence in ourselves, but by confidence in Jesus.”

Christian theologian and professor Roger Olson responds and expands upon the August 22, 2016 Religion News Service essay, “On LGBT equality, middle ground is disappearing” by David Gushee. Olson asks, “Once the government forces religious organizations to become inclusive of LGBT people without hindrances or discriminatory rules (e.g., forbidding gay marriage among its employees and/or students) by withholding tax exemptions all non-profit organizations receive, what will happen next?” He then offers brief but grim predictions, and a reminder that Christians have faced much worse.

In this opinion essay appearing on her blog, hosted by CharismaNews.com, Charisma editor Jennifer LeClaire shares her reflections and seeks to set the record straight about Bill Johnson.

With the intention of stirring up conversation on the biblical purpose of tongues, Scott Lencke wrote this article to get readers to rethink their approach and assumptions about glossolalia.

William De Arteaga writes: “This a is a long read, but also important to those of us wishing to make an impact on the secular world.”

Roger Olson has reproduced Stanley Gundry’s open letter to fellow ETS members about his concerns regarding introducing resolutions such as the recent four-fold statement on gender and marriage. He is responding to an apparent attempt to move the Society from having a doctrinal basis to having a precise and exclusive doctrinal statement.

“Have you ever seen someone try to help an injured animal? It can be a nerve-wracking experience. It’s a well-known fact that hurt animals – even the most domesticated ones – can’t be trusted. They might bite, scratch, or kick the very person trying to help out. We humans can be just like those animals; when we’re in pain, we’re more likely to hurt people around us. That’s why unforgiveness is so dangerous.
