Jen Miskov’s new book publishes October 3, 2017.

Jennifer A. Miskov, Walking on Water: Experiencing a Life of Miracles, Courageous Faith and Union with God (Bloomington, MN: Chosen Books, 2017), 192 pages, ISBN 9780800798512.

Jennifer Miskov is both a scholar and a revivalist. Her web site (www.SilverToGold.com/Jen-Miskov) gives us some details about her education and ministry. She has a Ph.D. in Global Pentecostal and Charismatic Studies from the University of Birmingham in the U.K. She was ordained by Heidi Baker, writes books, and is the founding director of Destiny House, which seeks to build communities of worshippers. In addition, she teaches a class on revival history at the Bethel School of Supernatural Ministry at Bethel Church in Redding, California. Heidi Baker wrote the foreword of the book and New Testament scholar, Dr. Craig Keener, wrote an endorsement for the book.

After the foreword the reader will find a short section titled “Beginnings” which is followed by seventeen chapters. At the end of each chapter there is an “activation.” The activations are exercises designed to help the reader apply the truths that were covered in the chapter. A number of the activations include prayers that can be prayed to further embrace the contents of the chapter.

“We can stay safe inside the boat and live mediocre and normal lives and still go to heaven. I wonder, though, what might be awaiting us if we leave our comfort zones and venture out into the dangerous waters because Jesus is there.”

—Jen Miskov

As you may have already guessed the book is based largely on Peter’s experience of walking to Jesus on the water as recorded in Matthew 14:22-33. Miskov draws out insights and principles from the biblical text and shows us how Peter’s experiences in the boat and on the water are relevant for believers today. At times she puts us in Peter’s shoes. The author tells us that encountering storms in life does not necessarily mean that we have not heard the voice of the Lord (page 34). She points out that the disciples found themselves in a storm because they did obey Jesus (page 37). She is careful as she writes about stepping out in faith, admitting that things don’t always turn out as we wish they would. The challenges or struggles of faith as well as its rewards are discussed. Throughout the pages of this book the author shares many of her own experiences in her walk of faith. At times she speaks about the experiences of others in church history such as Rees Howells and Lilias Trotter. Miskov advocates for bold faith. For example, in the opening pages she writes, “We can stay safe inside the boat and live mediocre and normal lives and still go to heaven. I wonder, though, what might be awaiting us if we leave our comfort zones and venture out into the dangerous waters because Jesus is there” (page 22). She does, however, indicate that not everyone is called to the same exploits of faith as not everyone has the same calling; Peter was the only one called to get out of the boat (page 59). The priority for everyone is to be drawing near to Jesus, cultivating intimacy with Him. Miskov stresses this point in the book.
Miskov, Writing in the Glory: Living from Your Heart to Release a Book That Will Impact the World (Redding, CA: Silver to Gold Publishing), 123 pages.

As a writer of both fiction and non-fiction (and an English teacher), I have read countless books on writing, but I’ve never read one quite like Jen’s (full disclosure: I know Jen from various conferences and as a recipient of a grant from a foundation that I am an officer of).

As I was saying, Jen’s book is unique. Several things make it so: first, it’s a book on writing, yet it doesn’t touch on grammar or style (she admittedly leaves that for others, some of whom she recommends); second, it is not just a book, it’s a workbook—so expect some interacting exercises (one criticism: the exercises could be a bit more vigorous and challenging; perhaps they were written for a seminar she teaches, which might require more abbreviated exercises); third, the book is written from a thoroughly Christian perspective (one might even say a Charismatic perspective); fourth, Jen, although an academic, becomes a coach, and waxes pastoral at times.

The genius of Jen’s approach is attributable to the third and fourth items, as Jen becomes to the reader the Charismatic coach, full of passion and inspiration, driving the reader to, well, write!

But first, a physical description of the contents: Writing in the Glory is composed of eight parts (counting the Introduction and Epilogue), which are composed of 34 chapters. Most chapters are very short; some with only one paragraph before getting to the “Activation” section, which is Jen’s term for exercises, yet the term means so much more to the Christian writer. For example, in the first chapter, “Writing in the Anointing,” the reader is advised to “Take a few minutes now to surrender your book to the Lord” (20). We are urged to invite the presence of the Holy Spirit, not just on our writing but on us! This technique/perspective transforms the book into a person-centered rather than product-centered workbook.

Of course the product is important, but it is subservient to the servant of God who is bowed to His will and anointing. A wonderful product does not issue from a producer who has no intimacy with and knowledge of his/her Creator. Or, in Jen’s words, “greater anointing and power will come when that book is birthed from a place of intimacy with God” (21).

Perhaps no chapter focuses as much on the writer as the chapter titled “You Were Born for This” (29-33). Here, Jen passionately coaches, “There is destiny in the message you carry. Nothing is by accident. … God has been preparing you to write and release the masterpiece inside of you. You are simply embarking on the journey of discovering what He has already formed within you” (29).

Jennifer Cisney, “Healing From the Pain of Sexual Assault” Enrichment (Spring 2009), pages 108-112.

Jennifer Cisney, a counselor, executive board member of the American Association of Certified Christian Sexual Addition Specialists, member of the the American Association of Christian Counselors since 1994 and survivor of sexual assault, recognizes “the progress the church has made in dealing with emotional pain and struggles in Christians.” The author, however, questions why she “can count on one hand the number of workshops that have addressed [the] critically important issue” of the “devastating and traumatic event” of rape and “why . . . society and the church are so reluctant to address it.”

Sexual assault is a widespread problem. Why is the church so reluctant to address it?

Cisney points to the “shame and stigma surrounding sexual assault” as a primary reason why most victims of rape do not seek help from the church or available community resources. She questions whether the Christian community neglects to address the problem of rape, believing that the crime of rape is not a “pervasive problem” even though the issue, as Cisney acknowledges, traces historically to the beginnings of recorded history.

Jennifer Cisney

The author, in addition to integrating issues related to rape in contemporary context with instances of rape in certain scriptural passages (i.e., 2 Sam. 13:19), addresses several of the misconceptions concerning sexual assault: (1) the belief that rape is not a widespread problem; (2) the misunderstanding that rape always involves sexual attack by a stranger, rather than by a date, acquaintance or other known person; (3) the error in believing that if serious physical injury does not result, the victim will be free of long-term effects of the attack, and other misconceptions. She is careful to cite important current statistics from the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network. For example: (1) One in 6 women is sexually assaulted in her lifetime; (2) someone in the US is sexually assaulted every 2 minutes; (3) victims of sexual assault are 3 times more likely to suffer from depression; 6 times more likely to suffer from post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD); 13 times more likely to abuse alcohol; 26 times more likely to abuse drugs and 4 times more likely to contemplate suicide.

Face the challenge: providing competent and effective ministerial care and counsel to victims of sexual assault has the potential to result in healing and wholeness for those deeply wounded by the trauma.

Cisney’s viewpoint is authentic due to her professional training and experience in treating the victims of sexual assault and to her personal history as a rape survivor. In view of the author’s credentials, the article serves as a very valuable resource for ecclesial leaders and others whose ministry contexts require some form of pastoral assistance or counsel to the victims of sexual assault. She advises pastoral counselors and others to be prepared to “ask the right questions”; to provide a safe place for victims to share their stories and to be prepared to refer victims of sexual assault to others qualified to assist those victims during the healing process. The article describes in some detail the nature and symptoms of acute stress disorder and PTSD, thus providing pastors and other leaders with essential and specific information needed to assess an individual’s need for referral to other forms of counseling, medical treatment and/or other resources to begin the journey of healing and restoration. She also carefully describes the distinctions between consensual sex and statutory rape from both moral and legal standpoints.
