Yes, I miss those days. Many things have changed. But God is still ready and able to work with all those who pursue him, no matter where they have come from or what they have done.

The Pneuma Foundation and our journal, The Pneuma Review, have been very blessed these last two years with how Cup and Cross Ministries enabled us to move from print to digital. What a boost this has been. All of us are thrilled with the new website.

Although some of us do miss having the paper journal in our hands, becoming PneumaReview.com has enabled us to reach farther and wider than ever before. Now we have a future that was not available to us before.

I want to express my appreciation for Mike Dies, Joe Joslin, Kevin Williams, John Lathrop, Tony Richie, and Amos Yong for their long term support and for the specific ways they have assisted Raul Mock in publishing the journal.

We look forward to placing our entire library of past issues online with open access for all. Speaking of past issues, there are several writers I want to personally acknowledge for their significant contributions to the journal: Wayne Grudem, J. Rodman Williams, Robert Graves, Jon Ruthven, Gary Grieg’s Kingdom and the Power, and Craig Keener. With the continued support of our writers and readers, we will continue to publish new material from today’s Pentecostal and charismatic scholars.

The early Pentecostals had an expectation of the soon return of Jesus. That expectation drove them to urgently share Jesus with the world. This urgency is what has fueled the worldwide growth of the Pentecostal/charismatic movement.

Let us talk about that for a moment. As Bible-believing Christians, we affirm that Jesus is the only way of salvation. We understand that there are many who do not know Jesus as Savior. If we believe—as I think we should—that Jesus is coming soon, then we should have no greater passion than telling those who have not yet heard.

I believe that the church needs to return to having a love for the Second Coming. Pentecostal/charismatics of today should return to the eschatology of the early Pentecostals. We certainly need a renewed urgency for sharing Jesus with a hurting world.

Let us ask the Father, in the Name of Jesus, to fill us fresh with God the Holy Spirit. The Spirit empowers us to live like Jesus today.

John Rea, Charisma’s Bible Handbook on the Holy Spirit (Creation House, 1998), 346 pages, ISBN 9780884195665.

For the pastor and Bible student that have been looking for a handbook on the Holy Spirit from a Pentecostal/charismatic perspective here is an all-in-one reference not to be missed.

Dr. Rea introduces this handbook by discussing how to read and study the Bible. He then concisely presents the deity and personhood of the Holy Spirit; a truth we need to be continually reminded of. For the majority of the work he looks at every major reference to the Spirit in Scripture. He does this by examining seven distinct categories from four biblical eras. ‘The Spirit of God in Creation and the Patriarchal Age,’ ‘the Era of Charismatic Leadership in Israel,’ and the ‘Era of Prophetic Announcement’ cover the Hebrew Scriptures. He expands the ‘Age of the Holy Spirit’ from Messiah’s birth to today into the biblical categories of the Gospels (Preparation), Acts (Outpouring), Epistles (Explanation) and Revelation (Consummation).

Nearly 100 pages are spent on the work and person of the Spirit in the Old Testament. This feature sets this book apart from other studies of the Holy Spirit that often neglect the Hebrew Scriptures. 24 pages are spent on the Gospels, 14 on Acts, over 40 on the Epistles, and several pages conclude the study with the book of Revelation. Beyond the easy to refer to passage-by-passage study, the book includes an extensive Scripture index, charts of key words and other valuable reference pages.

Although Dr. Rea’s approach seems to reflect a classical Pentecostal perspective, this book has been published under the name of the most recognized independent charismatic magazine, Charisma. Everyone in the Pentecostal/charismatic movement should be grateful for this Bible handbook which is centered on the person and ministry of the Holy Spirit. Readers will find this reference to have good poise and good scholarship, yet concise enough for even the beginning Bible student.

For these reasons, this handbook should be found in every Pentecostal/charismatic leader’s library. The Pentecostal/charismatic movement needs more reference works of this quality.

The Pneuma Foundation has come into being for the purpose of providing Biblical resources and information with the intent of expounding and defending the work of God the Holy Spirit and His gifts. These resources are for ministers and lay workers. We want to help local churches equip the saints and defend the Pentecostal/charismatic movement as having a great deal to contribute to the body of Christ.

Pentecostals and charismatics have caused a resurgence in the gifts of the Spirit for today. This movement has brought to the fore-front such issues as divine healing, power confrontations with he kingdom of darkness, the prayer of faith, New Testament prophecy, praying in tongues, the five-fold ministry, and the ministry of the miraculous. These issues are often taught without a strong Biblical foundation. This has led to error, extremes, and a weakened witness to other evangelicals. Therefore, our purpose is to help provide a balanced, non-denominational, Scriptural foundation for the gifts of the Spirit. We also desire to promote dialogue with non-charismatic evangelicals in the hopes of bringing us together in greater unity and practice.

The Pneuma Review, our quarterly journal, is designed along with other resources to assist in this vision.

As the president of the Pneuma Foundation, I would just like to express my gratitude to those of you, our members and friends, that have given so graciously to the ministry of the Pneuma Foundation. Without the gifts of equipment and financial support, this ministry would not be able to continue. With these gifts and the talented people who have given of their time and energy, the Pneuma Foundation has been able to produce some excellent materials in its short lifetime.

Again and again we receive notes from people saying how much this ministry is needed. Almost daily we receive encouragement that the vision of seeing balanced, Biblical teaching on the gifts of the Spirit and other doctrine from a Pentecostal/charismatic perspective is worthwhile and needed. Join with me in giving thanks and praise to God for being able to be a part of what He is doing in the earth today.

In this month of Thanksgiving, it is most appropriate to offer thanks to God for all the blessings we have. Let us press in to know Him even more.
