Mark Chancey’s Greco-Roman Culture and the Galilee of Jesus, reviewed by Thang San Mung
Chancey may be too quick to reject the proposals of his opponents on the ground of their archeological inadequacy. This same shortage in the archeological record may one day become a reversal that overturns his conclusions, a potential failure which Chancey himself seems aware of. Furthermore, he is going contrary to the common view of historians. Using logical deduction to bridge one fact to another is the way historians reconstruct history when physical evidences seem lacking. Yet, Chancey is quick to draw his own conclusion on this not-yet-very-clear historical construction of the long past.
Despite of this difficulty, however, this book is a groundbreaking work which initiates major questions for ongoing discussion regarding the historical reconstruction of the Palestine/Galilee of Jesus’ time. Therefore, this book is recommended as worthy reading for New Testament students at advanced level, for those interested in more in-depth research and for leaders who love to study the life of Christ in its real historical situation.
