Guiding my children to use media well
Additional thoughts
As an adult, I think that all of this is common sense. But I still remember how little I had to do with common sense when I was a teenager. Therefore, I feel it is better to lay it all out than assume my kids are going to figure it out on their own. Still, I am concerned about how my kids will take this. Ultimately, I am giving them considerable liberty but yet defining limits and explaining why those boundaries exist. They will be responsible for their choices, but I have a responsibility to shepherd them to the pastures were they can grow while protecting them from the wolves.
The sheep and wolves metaphor breaks down for me, though, when I try to compare it to the internet. I have a friend who wonders if any teenage boy has the capacity to handle unrestricted internet access in a godly way. How many stories have you heard about a devastating failure regarding pornography? Still, I do not believe most households have the skills or equipment necessary to filter out everything externally. My challenge is to navigate the question of how much restriction on my children is the right balance.
What about you? How have you faced these challenges? What have you learned from your failures? What have been your successes?
